St James Attractions

Neat thatch cottages and imposing stone mansions date back to the late 1800’s, but the main attraction is undoubtedly the splendid views across False Bay. Defined by brightly coloured Victorian bathing boxes, the St James tidal pool is one of the more protected and popular swimming spots of the city.

Cobbled streets, bookshops, antique and bric-a-brac stores rub shoulders with bistros, coffee shops, delis and seaside restaurants.

St James Activities

The popular St James pedestrian walkway winds its way past small coves, still rock pools and local surfing spots and for the more energetic, there are a number of wonderful hiking routes from Boyes Drive itself. Keep a sharp eye out for green signboards and stone steps leading ever upwards.

The area is renowned for its premier land-based whale and dolphin spotting. From July through November pods of whales make for the safety of the Cape coast to calve and are easily visible from Boyes Drive in particular.

Cape Town’s naval HQ, Simon’s Town and the Cape Point Nature Reserve are 10 -15 minutes away by car along an attractive marine drive.
